another author without endorsement or represent by not one of the author’s work
by not crediting the original author. Based on the article, most university
received an essay from their applicants are plagiarism where they are not
satisfied with this issue. Due to the problems colleges are facing with, they
decide to use plagiarism checker which is Turnitin – as in, “turn it in”.
Turnitin is an anti-plagiarism database service
that compares or checks student’s essays to an enormous document or other
writings. It helps colleges or schools to detect copying in academic term
papers and research by scanning the phrases from among billion web pages, books
and so on. It is began in 1990s and become a popular tool among teachers in
colleges and schools and this programme helps teachers to detect their
student’s homework.
Besides that, Turnitin allow
colleges or schools to review large numbers of essay quickly and creating a
database of student’s essays. It is also shows the calculation percentages of
possibly copied. Lastly, it depends to schools or colleges to determine whether
the plagiarism was minor, accidental or serious to reject the applicant.
Furthermore, the factors of plagiarism
are uninterested, poor planning, unintentional plagiarism, confusing of
citation and so on. First, uninterested can happen, when students do not want
to do the work or they have low motivation in it can causes lack of commitment
to them. Secondly, students have poor planning in doing their assignments where
they use to postpone their works. The results are when they lack of time to do
their original work and they are affected to do plagiarism.
Moreover, unintentional plagiarism
can be happen among students where without knowing they have been copied.
Confusing of citation is use to happen among students where they are not aware
of what proper research requires.
In conclusion, the plagiarism checkers
help teachers to detect their student’s homework by scanning and search for
similarities in phrases from web pages, books and so on. Andrew Ainslie, a
senior associate dean at UCLA Anderson said, “The more we can nip unethical
behaviour in the bud, the better”.
